Navigating Medicare can sometimes feel like a maze. Understanding what’s covered—and what isn’t — can be tricky. While Medicare does offer a lot of valuable services, it doesn’t cover everything. Let’s discuss some of the most common things Medicare won’t cover and share solutions to help you fill those gaps.
1. Dental Care
If you’ve been asking, “Does Medicare cover dental?” the answer, unfortunately, is no. Original Medicare (Parts A and B) typically doesn’t cover routine dental care, including cleanings, fillings, or dentures.
Solution: To ensure your pearly whites stay healthy, consider enrolling in a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C), which often includes dental coverage. Alternatively, you can purchase standalone dental insurance or set up a dental discount plan that can help lower your out-of-pocket costs.
2. Hearing Aids
Does Medicare cover hearing aids? Again, the answer is no. Original Medicare does not cover hearing aids or the exams needed to fit them, even though hearing loss is a common issue for older adults.
Solution: You have a few options to cover hearing aids. Like with dental, some Medicare Advantage plans may offer coverage for hearing aids. If that’s not an option, look into local hearing aid assistance programs or discount plans that can help reduce the cost. Some organizations also offer refurbished hearing aids at lower prices.
3. Routine Vision Care
Medicare doesn’t cover routine vision exams, glasses, or contact lenses — a significant gap for those who need regular eye care. However, Medicare typically does cover cataract surgery if it’s deemed medically necessary. This includes the cost of the surgery itself and one pair of glasses or contact lenses after the procedure.
Solution: Medicare Advantage plans often include vision care. If you prefer not to go that route, you can look into standalone vision insurance plans. Additionally, some retailers offer discount programs that can help make eyewear more affordable.
4. Long-Term Care
Long-term care, such as extended stays in a nursing home or assisted living, is not covered by Medicare. This can be a significant financial burden for many.
Solution: Planning ahead for long-term care needs is crucial. Consider long-term care insurance, which helps cover the costs associated with extended care. Medicaid might also be an option if you meet specific income and asset requirements. Another approach is to look into hybrid life insurance policies that include long-term care benefits.
5. Overseas Medical Care
If you love to travel, it’s important to know that Medicare generally doesn’t cover medical care outside the US.
Solution: Before you hop on that plane, consider purchasing travel medical insurance that covers you abroad. Some Medigap plans (like Plan G) may also offer limited coverage for emergency care during foreign travel.
6. Cosmetic Surgery
Medicare does not cover elective cosmetic surgery. However, if the surgery is medically necessary—like reconstructive surgery after an accident—it may be covered.
Solution: For elective procedures, you’ll need to pay out of pocket. If you’re considering cosmetic surgery, look for surgeons who offer payment plans or financing options to spread out the cost.
7. Alternative Therapies
Medicare doesn’t typically cover alternative therapies like acupuncture, naturopathy, or certain chiropractic services unless prescribed by a doctor for specific conditions.
Solution: Some Medicare Advantage plans may cover alternative therapies. If that’s not available, consider paying out of pocket or seeking out practitioners who offer discounts or sliding scale fees.
Final Thoughts
While Medicare offers excellent coverage for many healthcare needs, it’s essential to understand what it doesn’t cover so you can plan accordingly. By exploring options like Medicare Advantage plans, MediGap/Medicare Supplement insurance plans, or discount programs, you can ensure you’re protected from unexpected expenses. Veterans may have additional options through the VA for hearing, vision, and dental care. The VA offers a variety of services that may fill the gaps Medicare doesn’t cover.
Remember, a little planning goes a long way in keeping your healthcare affordable and stress-free!
